The DH22 was produced entirely in the Northmead, Sydney, factory between about 1931 and 1953, making one of the longest running Tractor models ever produced.
A.C.Howard designed and built the tractor to fill the void left by the removal of the Fordson model F from the Australian market in 1928 Howard had relied on the availability of the Fordson to power his Rotary Hoes, and the withdrawal of the Fordson spelt disaster, not only for Howard, but for Australian Fordson dealers, and other producer of Fordson accessories.
This tractor was powered by a Howard 22hp overhead valve, overhead cam wet sleeve engine designed and built by Howard. The Hoe could be raised by a hydraulic ram, and the Hoe could be removed to allow the tractor to be used on other implements.
Over the years various improvements such as pneumatic tyres, were added.
